Sound Installation
I found an abandoned pier that had once been used during the pandemic for reverse smuggling from Hong Kong to Shenzhen, at a time when maritime patrols had intensified. Across the water lay Hong Kong. I placed a spherical lamp by the shore.
At this location, radio signals from Hong Kong can be received in Shenzhen. I converted the radio’s volume into variations in the lamp’s brightness, so that different programs at fixed times each day would generate distinct rhythms of light.
(Maritime light signals are a form of communication used between vessels at sea before boarding.)
